The works of Ibn al-Haytham (ca. 965-1041)     www.ibnalhaytham.nl

Welcome to the website www.ibnalhaytham.nl. This website is a list of the works of the medieval Arabic mathematican, physicist and astronomer Ibn al-Haytham (ca. 965-1041 CE), in translation or in the original Arabic. We have included as many links as possible to that the reader may quickly access these materials.
The website is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin (1924-2018), who laid the foundation for the study of the Islamic scientific tradition in his series of books Geschichte des arabischen Schrifttums.

It is not the aim of this website to collect all modern literature on Ibn al-Haytham. We focus on editions and translations of Ibn al-Haytham's own works in order to make Ibn al-Haytham's own words available to the reader whenever possible.
Ibn al-Haytham is mainly known for his Optics in 7 Books. The Optics was translated into Latin in the 12th century and the author's name (al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham) was latinized to Alhazen in the process. The form "Al-Haitham" which sometimes occurs in the modern literature is erroneous. No authentic portraits of Ibn al-Haytham have been preserved; all portraits on the internet are arbitrary impressions by modern artists.
On the life and works of Ibn al-Haytham see the article by A.I. Sabra in Dictionary of Scientific Biography 6 (1972) pp. 189-210, see the online version, with the update.
On the role of Ibn al-Haytham in the history of science see Mattias Schramm, Ibn al-Haytham's Stellung in der Geschichte der Wissenschaften, Fikrun wa Fann 1965, pp. 65-85, scan. Note: the scan includes at the end German translations and transcriptions of all the Arabic words and passages in the text, in Schramm's own beautiful handwriting.

Wiedemann, Beiträge dur Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften bei den Arabern, Annalen der Physik und Chemie159 (1876), pp. 656-658, reprinted in F. Revision of the Optics (tanqI.h al-manA.zir) by Kamal al-Din al-Farisi (13th century): this revision (text and commentary) on Ibn al-Haytham's Optics is important to reconstruct the Arabic original. The commentary is followed by Kamal al-Din's revision of Ibn al-Haytham's treatise on the burning sphere (no. 7), Kamal al-Din's own explanation of the rainbow, and then Kamal al-Din's revisions of three other treatises by Ibn al-Haytham: On the properties of shadows (no. 11), On the shape of the eclipse (no. 6), and on light (no. 2).

An anonymous treatise on the hyperbola and its asymptotes has been attributed by R. Rashed to Muhammad (not al-Hasan) ibn al-Haytham on the basis of a remark at the end which reads: " the treatise has ended, and it is understood from the expressions that it was composed by Ibn al-Haytham, may God have mercy upon him, and we have profited from it and from the knowledge in it" (tammat al-risAla, wa-yufhamu min `ibArAtihi 'annahA ta'lIf Ibn al-Haytham ra.himahu-llah, wa-nafa`nA bihi wa-bi-`ulUmihi)

Arabic edition and French translation in R. Rashed, L'hydrostatique de Ménélaüus, Berlin 2020, pp. 97-129. Rashed argues (pp. 94-96) that this work is by Muhammad ibn al-Haytham who is different from al-.Hasan ibn al-Haytham.

SPURIOUS WORKS

Treatise on the fruit of wisdom (maqAla fI thamarat al-.hikma), not mentioned in GAS, not mentioned in RI.
This may not be a genuine work of Ibn al-Haytham.
Arabic edition in Mohammad Abd al-Hadi Abou Ridah, Maqala `an thmarat al-.hikma: a treatise on the fruiit (benefit) of wisdom). , Cairo 1991, pdf. This is probably a reprint of the edition by M. Abd al-hadi Abu Ridah, Kuwait, Kuwait University, 1987 (in the Festschrift (?) Zaki Nadjib Mahmud faylasufan wa-adiban wa-mu`alliman, pp. 519-555, not seen)
Arabic Ms. Istanbul, Köprülü 1604, f. 43-59

Poem on the letter `ayn for determining the qibla, time and ascensions (al-qa.sIda al-`ayniyya fI ma`rifat al-qibla wa'l-awqAt wa'l-.tawAli`) RI p. 137 no. A19, ms. Escorial II 976/2, is this genuine?

Poem on the entry of the sun into lunar mansions RI p. 137 no. A20, ms. Princeton Yehuda 1168, is this genuine?

Treatise on the preparation of lemmas for the construction of conic sections on some plane by the method of craftsmen (risAla fI taw.ti`at al-muqaddamAt li-`amal al-qu.tU` `alA sa.t.hin mA bi-.tarIq .sinA`I), R. Rashed states that this (anonymou)s treatise in ms. Florence, Bibliotheca Laurenziana, no. 153 f. 97b-100b has been misattributed by A.I. Sabra to Ibn al-Haytham on the grounds that it follows a treatise by Ibn al-Haytham on the parabolic mirror. See MI2 p. 19-20 note 72.

Note: R. Rashed argues in MI2, pp. 1-19, that there were two contemporay scholars "Ibn al-Haytham" with first names Mu.hammad and al-.Hasan. His arguments have been accepted in RI, p. 130-131 who has a special section on this Muhammad ibn al-Haytham. A.I. Sabra disagrees and thinks that there was only one exact scientist Ibn al-Haytham, see A.I. Sabra, One Ibn al-Haytham or Two? An exercise in reading bibliographical sources, Zeitschrift für Geschichte der arabisch-islamischen Wissenschaften vol. 12 (1998), pp. 1-50, vol. 15 (2002-3), pp. 95-108.
The name "Mohammad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham" occurs in the Arabic manuscripts of the following two works:
1. Commentary on the Almagest of Ptolemy. In the Arabic Ms. Istanbul, Topkapi Serayi, 3329, ff. 38b-158a. The name is written as Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham in the beginning (f. 38b:2) and on f. 156b:2 as Muhammad ibn al-Hasan.
2. Summary of the treatises by Menelaus on the determination of different substances.
Rashed has also argued that some other treatises which are attributed to al-Hasan ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham may be the work of this Mu.hammad ibn al-Haytham. See, for example, R. Rashed, L'hydrostatique de Ménélaüus, Berlin 2020, pp. 130-143 for On the form of the world, and R. Rashed, le pseudo-al-Hasan ibn al-Haytham sur l'asymptote, in R. Fontaine et. al, eds., Studies in the History of Culture and Science: A Tribute to Gad Freudenthal, Leiden, Brill, 2011, pp. 7-41, for an anonymous treatise on the hyperbola and its asymptotes which is attributed at the end to "Ibn al-Haytham."
