Visit to the Mathematics Village near Eskişehir and Astrolabe Program

On October 24-25, 2022, our team held a program on the astrolabe at the wonderful Mathematics Village (Çakılarası Matematik Köyü) near Eskişehir, Turkey. This page contains some photos of the mathematics village together with links to special pages on the programs, with some of the material and more photos.
The Mathematics Village was founded by Emeritus Professor Dr. Mehmet Şahin Koçak of Anadolu üniversitesi, Eskişehir.
The program consisted of four parts:
Introduction (held in abbreviated form)
Standard Astrolabe Workshop
Workshop on Abjad Numbers
Workshop on Drawing an Astrolabe by means of traditional methods used by Taqi al-Din (1526-1585) and other astrolabe makers.

We observed a phenomenon which is described by the late Utrecht astronomy professor Marcel Minnaert (1893-1970) on p. 5 of his classic book The Nature of Light and Color in the Open Air (Dover Reprints, 1954):
" During a solar eclipse, the dark moon is seen to move in front of the solar disk until only a thin crescent is left. At that instant it is worth noting that all spots of light under a tree resemble crescents, large or small, bright or dim."
This popular book cannot yet be yet legally downloaded on the internet free of charge. The late Prof. Dr. Minnaert, would certainly regret this situation, because he worked all his life selflessly in order to make his knowledge available to all.
